Earlier this week, Variety reported that the Netflix teen drama series Grand Army will be canceled, after just one season.
Grand Army, which was originally based on Katie Cappiello’s play called Slut, centered around five students attending the largest public high school in Brooklyn as they fight to combat racial discrimination, economic differences, and sexual identities, while also trying to make a name for themselves in the world.
The coming-of-age series starred Odessa A’zion (Joey Del Marco), Odley Jean (Dominique Pierre), Amir Bageria (Siddhartha Pakam), Maliq Johnson (Jayson Jackson), Amalia Yoo (Leila Kwan Zimmer), and many others.
Cappiello created the show, and served as executive producer, along with Joshua Donen, Beau Willimon, Jordan Tappis, Nicolette Donen, and Elizabeth Kling.
Many fans were shocked to hear that the teen drama series will come to an end after just one season. When the series premiered on the streaming platform last October, it received mostly positive reviews, earning a rating of 71 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.6 stars on IMDB.
Although Netflix has not released an official statement that explains the reason behind Grand Army's cancellation, it’s speculated that the view counts were simply not high enough to justify the show's budget.
Though Grand Army was criticized for its lack of originality, and was even called a lacklusterEuphoria. However, it was praised for its diverse casting and its narrative, which focused on teens from different racial backgrounds.
Fans of the Netflix teen series took to social media to share their disappointment in the show’s cancellation:
Another fan went as far as to tag other streaming services, asking them to pick up Grand Army for another season and continue the storyline in all capital letters:
The news of the cancellation of Grand Army comes a month after the superhero series Jupiter’s Legacy, which is just one of many Netflix original shows, was also canceled after one season. The series starred Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, and Leslie Bibb, and was Netflix’s first step into the "Millarverse," a specific timeline in the DC Universe.
The single nine-episode season of the teen drama Grand Army is available to stream on Netflix.
